It is Time for a Team Checkup!
Welcoming in a new year means welcoming a new set of goals and finding ways to stand out against competition by having a team that expertly shows patients the value of choosing you. To do that, you need to ensure you team is constantly getting stronger by putting together personal, track-able, and attainable growth plans for each person and department.
Investing in Your Team is Worth It
Team building is the most valuable investment you can make in today’s dental climate as it builds trust, mitigates conflict, encourages communication, and increases collaboration. Effective team building means more engaged employees which is not only good for culture but helps combat the current employee turnover challenge plaguing most areas. A motivated and happy office makes everyone’s jobs easier and reduces daily stress.
The Power of Team Meetings
It is amazing how fast positive changes will happen in your practice when team meetings are held consistently, taken seriously, and with a structured purpose. These meetings should range from morning daily huddles to review the upcoming day and ensure everyone is on the same page; weekly meetings to set monthly goals/expectations and track progress; to monthly in-depth training sessions and marketing/production reviews.
Here is a list of topics that you can use to help with creating powerful team meetings to ensure your team is delivering the highest level of dentistry to your patients.
- Stats, stats, and more stats as each team member needs to buy into the daily, weekly, and monthly goals
- Constantly reinforcing the core values of showing respect, trust, and integrity for both patients and team members to create a harmonious atmosphere at the office
- Highlight and call out great examples of leadership or anything else exceptional a team member/department does (especially hitting a production goals)
- Role-play scenarios and review any “bad patient experiences” to avoid them in the future (don’t “scold the situation”, instead make it a learning experience for everyone)
- Have team/department leaders meet separately to discuss, review, and ensure the departments are working together as best as they can and prevent senseless infighting
- Let everyone see the marketing messaging, advertisements, etc. so they understand the image you are trying to project to help them feel included and improve their “buy-in”
- Team building exercises and try to have a monthly function/lunch either in or out of the office where people feel appreciated and can relax to reduce stress
- Have leads and other team members give presentations about teachable moments that the rest of the team may have little knowledge about designed to help the team appreciate each other’s tasks (e.g., the person who handles inventory can show everyone what it takes to do that job, why it is important to follow protocols, and just how difficult it is to do it if people do X, Y, or Z)
